I hope this short outline will tell You something about my view on project management.
- It's all about peoples and communication.
- Respect
For other peoples, for Your self, for the company culture and for the assignment
- (Project) management is not science with absolute certain knowledge.
- You cannot learn to be a good manager by reading a book.
You are a complete human being and You use Your self in Your communication with other humans. The human You have come to be is the sum of all Your experiences in life.
What You can learn from books about management is a set of techniques and the meaning of the latest buzz-words, and well, You can get some inspiration.
I did read some books and I did get a PRINCE2 certification but experience is more valuable.
- "I will rather change the world than report about it. I did not choose to become a journalist".
Yes I do my status reporting but the time spent doing that should not harm my running the project. It's a question of balance.
- When You fight the crocodiles You forget the task was to dry out the lake.
My favourite statement telling the difficulties You may have doing the right things in a busy (reactive) work day. Do not loose focus on the goal.
- Devil's in the detail
Doing ICT projects You need to manage a lot of details without loosing the big picture. Missing a cable can set You back days. Often You need to ensure that the tech. staff have thought about everything.
- Doing the right things at the right moment. Or: due diligence
This is my private translation of a quote from the most well known business man in Denmark. His company’s (Mærsk) "motto".
- Choose Your battles carefully.
Part of my life's philosophy. Some causes are just not worth the struggle. Live and let live.
